Many workplaces have been proactive in making spaced working areas and working from home arrangements during the Covid 19 pandemic. This has seen many workplaces reduce hours, and reduce staff levels to try and combat the spread of viruses such as influenza and of course Covid 19 where present.

The hard work and patience of all of us needs to continue as we progress into our winter cold and flu season to try to reduce these viruses from becoming more prevalent. Already this season there has been a large reduction in the reported cases of the common cold and flu as we have introduced these distancing measures.

Returning to the workplace introduces an increase of the bodies exposure to various bacteria and possibly viruses which society need to try to limit. This will of course require workplaces and its employees to introduce a continued focus on making sure the workplace is a clean and safe environment for all employees. Guidelines have included cleaning of surfaces should involve detergent, hot water and chlorine based disinfectant solutions. Look at cleaning solutions made up of 62 to 72 percent ethanol, 0.5 percent hydrogen peroxide, or 0.1 percent sodium hypochlorite.

Some of the steps which should be introduced include:

• The cleaning of commonly touched surfaces using an alcohol based cleaner with at least 70% alcohol or a disinfectant and or detergent solution.
• Identification of commonly shared items in the workplace such as vehicles, keyboards, phones, elevators, cash registers and EFTPOS terminals to allow for cleaning procedures to be introduced.
• Introduction of a regular cleaning regime for all employee workstations at common intervals such as breaks, shift changes and interactions with other people.
• Use of hand sanitiser and more importantly washing of hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
